To best preserve the henna design, one should leave the paste on as long as possible, sometimes even dampening the paste with a spray of water and lemon juice to restain the skin again. The paste should flake off naturally and will leave the design underneath in bright orange color at first. This color then deepens to the darker red-brown that is most indicative of henna art.
